My new nosy be committed suicide...:(

Thursday at about 2pm I went into the room to mist the chams. I mist my yr old amilobe first and then the baby nosy. When I started to mist the baby he was loving it as usual and then about a minute in he just dropped! He fell from the top of his cage , hit the flower pot and then hit the bottom. It was horrible! I could instantly tell that something was wrong. His one side looked caved a little. I immediately called our vet from work and he came right over . He was there by 315 and by looking at him he basically said its a waiting game . The baby nosy be started to try and get to his feet at some points and I actually thought he was going to be alright but I woke up the very next morning and he was gone. Spike (my son named him) is the first little guy I have ever lost in such a way. We're all very upset I couldn't even send my son to school that day. Since his passing I have went over everything I could of possibly done differently. I have since baby proofed my big guys enclosure.

I mean do chams fall like this often? He was always a little wobbly on the branches but I just figured that was normal due to his age (4.5 months)

I just don't know what to do now, I would like to get another cham but im a little scared to get another baby. Plus my wife is going crazy that 300 dollars just took a dive. Plus my son is STILL upset, (spike stayed in his room).

Rough week... Any advice/comments will help.

Thanks

I'm so sorry :( that's awful...

They do dive bomb drop like that, but usually don't die.. you said he hit the flowerpot? Is it one of the hard clay type ones?? I'm so sorry:(

Thank you...ya it was horrible to watch, luckily my son didn't see it. But no it wasn't a hard clay pot. It was a plastic pot, I guess he just hit it in the wrong spot. I have no idea...

:( So sorry to hear about your loss. That is about my babies age and is scary to me. Only thing I have a question about is why was he wobbly? Mine will do the leaf walk from time to time but not wobbly at all. Maybe there was an underlining issue. If you feel like investigating into it post your info under the health clinic I'll link for you and more experienced keepers can go over it to see if maybe there could have been something different or in question.

Again so sorry for your loss. I'm guessing it is just one of those freak accidents though.:(

So sorry for the tragedy. We've had our share of crazy things here, too. I've heard they can fall and that you needed to not have a high cage initially because of this, but I don't know anyone who lost one due to a fall (though do know of a leopard gecko being lost that way.) No loss is ever easy and I'm sure this one is particularly difficult - seeing it, having some hope that all would be well, etc.

Take care,
Dana

I'm so sorry you lost him, this does sound like it was a freak accident as chameleons are super well built to handle very high falls.

Hello, very sorry for your loss!! As keepers it is always difficult when we lose something we care about. I recently purchased 2 females about the same age,I put them in 24x24x48 cages. I had trouble with them finding food etc at first and if I had it to do over again I would have kept them in a much smaller cage until they grew some. I have been told that many breeders keep young chems in smaller horizontal cages until they get older. My youngest had been kept in such a cage and she had the most trouble adapting to the vertical cage. It is possible that there could have been other factors involved as well but at this point it is to late to go into that. I hope you will not let this stop you from getting another when the time is right!!! This site has many links and very experienced people to guide you before the next purchase if you feel the need for it,again sorry for your loss!!!

Condolences for your loss! very heart breaking, I wouldn't know what to do if I lost my Nosy, best wishes!

I am sorry for your loss. Losing him in such a freak way would make the loss even more difficult, my condolences.

Wow. So sorry to be reading this. I just lost my Fenix last week due to a freak fall/accident. Again, I'm sorry. :(

Maybe you could work something out with the breeder? Most people are really understanding (at least that I've met here) Maybe he could give you a discount or something?? Idk if that would work, but hey its worth a shot?? Poor baby..

Thanks everyone! Its been hard, and its really weird passing by his empty cage.

I am so dreading that feeling again........sorry for your loss, I must agree you were just unlucky. Chams have cartilage ribs and puff them out for natural shock absorbers. There was almost no way to anticipate or prevent this.

Wow, how utterly shocking and sad! I am so sorry for the loss of your baby Nosy Be! It's never easy when we lose our beloved chams, and I'm sure even more difficult when it is by accident. Best wishes to you and yours. :(

Ya I'm going to ask him, but until then if anyone hears about a good deal on a male nosy be please keep me in mind

Awe this is sooo sad. This is the second one that has died from a fall on the forum in the past week. So very sorry for your loss and in such a horrible way. My heart goes out to you.
