Not to get all religious, biblical or off subject here, but could you clarify what a serpent is?I am a Christian and I want to say that the "serpent" is what is associated with the devil not the snake.

Yes.Serpent and snakes are not necessarily synonymous in old testament Hebrew. I took a uni class on the literary origins of biblical writings (absolutely fascinating, BTW), and there has been much interpretation into the particular words used for the serpent in both partial and very different versions of the origin of man story present in the current structure of Genesis. My take away from our readings were that although the implication seemed to be there that the snake was used as a representative form, the character was not necessarily a "snake" in the modern English sense.
No religious intention here, so no theological debate please. Simply an interesting comment on linguistics.
