Cause of Herbie's sickness..

Some of you may have read my prior post when I took my 1 year old veiled to the vet. He was sick, and not eating, but drinking. I know that many problems are due to husbandry, and please keep in mind that I don't need anyone to ask me what my set up is like because I am not asking anyone a question. The problem with Herbie I just found out was that he has parasites. This happened due to the fact that I had a bowl at the bottom of his cage (not for drinking) but for when my drip system hit the bottom so it wouldn't just disperse onto the cage floor. He ended up using it to poop in as well, and I never saw him drink out of it, but that is the only factor I can think of as to why he would have gotten a parasite. Being gone throughout the day, and after his dripper runs out, I know he still has a possibility of drinking from stand still water, he got smart to any source of water quick, even as a little guy. He has been tested before and been fine, but his stools tested positive this time. When I got home I found him dead on the bottom, it was very sad. He was my first chameleon, and although I have others, and he isn't my last, he was a hardy and fun guy. He really did like me more than tolerate me and he enjoyed when I came around because he knew I either had a tasty treat or I was coming to mist. I took him to the vet, and he looked fine according to the vet, and that is when he asked me if he doesn't get better, to send him a stool sample. Unfortunately they can deteriorate so quickly that 2 days was too long. DONT HAVE WATER AT THE BOTTOM OF THE CAGE THIS SHIT'S SERIOUS!

Sorry for your loss, it's always tough when we lose one, even worse when it's our first/favorite. Hopefully others will learn from you and not make the same mistake. Thanks for sharing your story!

Sorry to hear you lost your chameleon. He could have gotten parasites from his feeders also. It might not have been the water.

I am positive that he loved his life up until that point he was a well rounded man! Feeders ? Like the feeder holder? The feed itself? Or the source of feed?

Yep crickets, roaches, supers etc etc can all carry parasites. This is why Annual or Biannual fecals are always a good idea.

well, shit, that means I will probably need to get my baby chameleon tested too. She lives in a completely different cage/set up/ and cannot see the male at all, but she eats the same food. I get my food from a very clean pet store, and I have personally been back to check out the scene cause I am one of those crazies that make sure its all right, and there is a herpetologist that works there. Is it still possible that their crickets could contain parasites?

Completley possible, but not necessarily their fault. It's easy for contamination at the cricket farm.

I would have my other chameleons tested just as a precaution.
