Does anybody have a good dry gut load recipe that they would like to share?
Thanx in advance

I use cricket crack sold by a member of our forum. It is cheaper than making it myself and I get a useable amount. You need to offer them water jells or keep a balled up wet paper towel in their cage. You can set this wet pt on a plastic cover to prevent your cage from getting oogie. You need to change this daily as it gets covered with the cricket droppings.

While I appreciate that Ryan has published the Adcham.com diet here in its entirety, a link to the web page would have been sufficient. As Chris A posted recently about plagiarism (which once again included our Adcham.com website, not primarily but it really hurt the author of the article), this insect diet has been plagiarized and used for commercial use a number of times. Change an ingredient here or there, change a word or two, publish a partial list claiming it be your own, and it is no longer plagiarizing, right? To date, only two websites have been given permission to reproduce this diet on the internet.

We have wanted to remove the insect diet from Adcham.com many times. But we allow it to remain to assist the chameleon hobbyist (help is such a patronizing term). It allows the hobbyist to use the ingredients as a guideline and perform their own nutritional analysis. You know exactly what is going into your chameleon's mouth, and once you understand the nutritional contents, can move ingredients around based on the needs of your chameleon(s). And certainly it has been key in taking to many species that I have worked with to multiple generations. Ye gads, if you are going to use anything (better than nothing) use bee pollen, spirulina and egg yolk.

I mean no offense to those that produce commercial insect gutloads, none at all, do what you do, and some huge companies do it as well. The fact that insects are eating the stuff means nothing - insects will eat anything, including each other and their own poop. Yes, the recipe is a lot of work. And maybe it is time to finally remove it from the internet.

Wow! That's a great assortment of nutrients. I've just been chicken feed for laying hens for my crickets and mealworms. Time to change?

BocaJan - Who do you get the Cricket Crack from? Could you you give me some more information on it please. Amounts you can buy, price etc.
Thanks!

I wish I could tell you. I checked my container and it doesn't have a name or web address on it. I purchased it from someone on the forum. I will do some searching and see if I can find him. I think he was from Georgia, but I could be mistaken.

Maybe time for a change :). And the recipe makes a sufficient amount, you can freeze it, and/or you can sprinkle it on your breakfast cereal or toast and enjoy it yourself. It's a good boost to the average American diet that typically results in obesity and related health issues

Chicken food contains a lot of protein (I am sure that someone else can help with stats on this, Lynda :)) and possible hormones and other impurities. It is fine for insect breeding, as is a good quality fish food, but you probably do not want to use it for gutloading the insects that go directly to your chameleon's mouth.

And of course, other chameleon husbandry methods need to be in play, as well as good insect management, for your chameleon to thrive. I see that you are in AZ. Lucky you, with so much excellent light, as with Southern CA where chams should be kept outdoors much of the year.

I guess it's all a matter of perspective. As soon as I have time, I will ask the list administrator to replace the web page copy with a link that will suffice if any chameleon keeper has the motivation or interest to look at it.

Can anyone list the ingredients in this Cricket Crack please?

I believe that he would not publish the list of ingredients for fear of plagiarism. There are a lot of theives out there and I can't say that I blame him if he is trying to make a profit.

im not trying to rain on anyones parade... and im going to sound like a "horrible" cham owner but...
who in their right mind would seriously chase down 20 ingredients, many of which arent readily available- to feed a f'ing bug. emeril *bam* lagassi wouldnt even know where to start if you handed him that receipe.

now before i get the flames, lets understand something. i do gut load my insects- with collards, mustard, turnip greens, carrots, apples, romaine, green beans, squash ect, basically whatever i happen to have at the time.

my point being, this receipe is indented for private use only. i could see a commercial operater going to this length to make this into a professional product, however, this is not the case. if you have enough time to fetch and make this receipe, please come to my house while im on vacation and cook for my reptiles...

well don't get me wrong there is really good and pushing for a healthy animal and doin everything within your powers.

sometimes yes thats not available, all those ingrediants. But if you can't geta few of them, im sure the gut mix would still be just as good.

I understand completely. You get out of your hobby what you put into it.

James, it is a moot point now anyway. Ingredients are readily available on line, at grocery stores, and health food stores and the insect diet is a lot of fun to put together - hobbies = fun. Truthfully I have had no problems locating the ingredients. No matter, no flames, nothing. I responded initially because of my irritation at having the web page copied to this forum. There are a lot larger problems than this to deal with.

The sites I looked at indicated protein in the 16 to 20% range. Some also indicated quite a bit of vitamin A (like layena) in the chicken feeds.
http://poultry.purinamills.com/OURPRODUCTS/Products/Layena/default.aspx

What scares me more is the formaldehyde in some of them. If there in large enough quantities it can interfere with the protein digestion. Would it be enough to affect the protein digestion of a chameleon?
"formaldehyde can, if added in sufficient quantities, reduce proteindigestibility"

"Irradiating poultry feed would kill salmonella, eliminating the need to treat poultry feed with formaldehyde"...

I still prefer using all natural gutloads for my insects.
