My new veiled, Clint Eastwood

Hey all,

I'm new to this forum and new to chameleons, and about a month ago I received my baby male veiled chameleon, Clint Eastwood, through FL chams. He seems to be a happy fellow, I keep him in an all mesh enclosure that is 2 feet by 2 feet at the bottom and 4 feet tall.

I built this over the summer out of pine that is treated to be water and sunlight resistant. He's got a long fluorescent bulb in the back, and two regular bulbs for heating in two separate basking spots (the left one is burnt out currently). The plants are phobos on the right, and cronos on the left. He is on a steady diet of crickets (dusted once every few weeks) with the occasional wax worm. I've tried giving him bananas, apples, and carrots, but he has always left these untouched. Like I said, he seems pretty happy but I do have two concerns:

1. He really doesn't like me so far, he usually is perched on the tall stick in the back corner and will try to run down it if I get close to the cage, even to bring in food or mist, and hisses at me if I get my hands anywhere near him. I understand that chameleons are generally asocial but is there anything I can do to get him to at least understand that I'm friendly?

2. I live in a crappy student rental house (I'm a student) that has poor insulation. I live in Wisconsin and fall has hit pretty quick and it is a lot chillier in the house. I went home Saturday morning this past weekend and put about 6 legless crickets in his feeder bowl before I left. He still hasn't touched these, I haven't seen him go up to his basking spot yet, and I'm worried that the temperature drop may be affecting him. Obviously my roommates and I are going to turn on the heat soon, but I am worried it still won't be warm enough in my room. Is there anything I can do to boost the temperature in his cage? Should I place heat lamps on the sides? Get a space heater?

I'll post pictures of him once he comes out of hiding and gives me a good shot. Thanks for reading, I'm excited to be a part of such a cool chameleon community.

You really need to put some foliage towards the top of his cage since they're arboreal creatures, you'll want to give him horizontal perches at different levels so he can move up or done to thermoregulate his temperature. I totally feel ya on the fall hitting hard I'm in college as well and have a house, we just built though. The room where are chams are was getting down to the low 60's high 50's at night so I just got a little space heater and set it on a timer to go off throughout the day and night. I'll probably end up hooking it up to a thermostat or something like that eventually. This place rocks man! Read all that you can and your Cham will flourish, I'm constantly reading old threads and learning new things.

Oh welcome to e forums as well:D

For your cricket dilemma, chams can be really picky eaters and tire easily of the same prey items. You'll want to try different feeders to find what he likes best they each have different tastes and its all about getting to know them. You might try dubia I think they're a great feeder, just try not to let one insect make up more than 25-35% of his diet. Good luck!

Welcome

Definitely add some foliage at the top! This should make Clint feel more secure. This may also help out when you approach the cage. If he feels more secure, he wont need to run! Also, (sorry, I can't resist....) you need an empty chair just to the side of the enclosure !

Thanks for the feedback, I've been gutloading my crickets with a dry mix from fluekers. It just ran out but it's really convenient to just dump it in and not worry about switching out food that I think I'm going to keep ordering that. For temperature all I have is one of those stick on strip thermometers, I'm going to grab a few more and place them in various spots in his cage next time I'm at the hardware store.

You have no idea how many times I've heard this joke...

Hi there. Welcome to the forum. You have come to the right place for all your questions to be answered. I'm a bit concerned about your supplements dusting your crickets once every few weeks is not enough. There are a lot of variations to supplementing but you would do well to dust plain phosphorus free calcium without d3 every feed as he is a baby and growing fast. You will also need to dust once every two weeks calcium with d3 and a multivitamin every two weeks. As you learn more about feeding and gutloading you can change that to suit your circumstances.:)

I'm glad you said this! All I have is calcium + D3, which I read not to do too much (hence the "every few weeks"). I'll make sure to grab some phosphorus and vitamins then. Thanks!

Calcium with NO phosphorus every feeding, calcium with D3 and NO phosphorus 2 times a month, and a multivitamin 1-2 times a month is the recommended safe schedule for a veiled. Also, do not use the premade flukers crap, it is junk. if you don't want to add more food every day you can either order some "cricket crack": http://tikitikireptiles.com/products.php?id=48 or do what I do and blend a bunch of fruits, vegetables, and greens that are recommended together with some water and make ice cubes. I just thaw one out and put it in and they eat it up. Here are a few blogs you can read to learn how to properly care for your little one to ensure a long healthy and happy life. Also, a lot of veileds can be quite grumpy, so he may or may not grow out of it.

I appreciate all the wealth of info you guys have given me, I wish I would have signed up here sooner!
Anyways here he is, not the best pic, but I got him out of his cage and on my sleeve for this one (he's not a fan of the iphone).

He does seem to like sitting on my head though. He's up there right now while I write this, and whenever I look in the mirror he's green. :D

Would you mind posting a picture of the back of his back feet? "he" kind of looks like a "she" to me  which will be a WHOLE nother story in the husbandry department.

hahaha oh jeeze. He:)confused:) has got the crest on his chin, which I thought meant male.... I'll try to get one now while... "he's" asleep.

EDIT: I looked into this myself, if I'm correct I should be looking for little "spurs" on the back feet? I think I see them but he's not in a good spot right now and I don't want to keep turning on his light. I'll have to check tomorrow.

No all of them have that. The spurs are clearly visible on males, but it is not impossible for females to have them either. Females also tend to have smaller casques. But yeah if you could get a full body side picture and a picture of his back heels we can give you a definitive answer.

Since you got him from FL chams I am inclined to say he is a male, but mistakes can be made no matter the breeder
