I called reptile pets direct today and asked a couple questions about pygmys and they told me that Tanzania is opening it's exports again in April and to try back then because they will have that and much more. Has anyone heard anything about this ?

Good news for people who want to keep species from there bad news for the chams. I doubt it will be any better than before. I hope they keep the exporting shut down.

I'm OK with conservative quotas. Kinyongia uthmoelleri has got quotas of only 25 farmed animals a year world wide. I'm OK with that or perhaps some occasional WC Kinyongia matschiei.

Im not opposed to exporting farm raised animals or even super low numbers of other species. Though, I doubt most of the farm raised animals are actually farm raised. Have you seen the condition a lot of those come in? I doubt the corruption will get any better either. Ive just been thinking much more about it lately. Ive always loved finding salamanders and reptiles in the wild but Ive gotten really into it as of last year. Id much rather be able to see these animals thrive in the wild not die in peoples cages.

If exporting continues they not only need to get rid of the corruption but also have more strict guidelines of how these animals are kept and the conditions of them when being exported along with very few numbers. This will raise prices but it would be best for the animals next to no exporting at all.

I actually think Chris is working with (apart of the Chameleon Specialist Group) the IUCN Red List on this problem right now to eliminate this kind of problem (over collecting and exportation problems). The IUCN is working to establish chameleon population range and abundance data then quotas are effected from this data. Maybe he'll chime in and elaborate a bit more.

I like the way this man thinks. The super low numbers of species: Id like to see go to the right hands to help establish a captive population.
