New Jackson's Not Eating

Hi guys this is a pretty basic question, but one I'd feel better getting an answer for. I just managed to pick up a new baby Jackson's, and I just got him home yesterday. My problem is that he doesn't seem at all interested in eating anything. He'll watch as a cricket or two pass him by but doesn't turn his head in interest at all. I know the temps are right, and it's plenty humid inside his enclosure so I know those aren't the causes. Is it a chance that he's simply getting acclimated to his new enclosure? I know that some reptiles are better about getting settled than others so I was just curious. This is the first contact I've had with a Jackson's so I just thought I'd see what any of you thought. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

ok. first of all you are right, when you get a new chameleon they will not eat for a week until they get used to their new home. mine did the same and i panicked cuze my baby veiled wouldnt eat at first and i found out that it takes a week or so and then they eat like crazy, sometimes as much as twenty a day!

Thanks Ken, that's quite helpful. His getting accustomed to his new enclosure is what I figured it would be. Thanks again! :)

No there's no wild chameleons of any sort around this part of Florida, not that I'm aware of any indigenous species. I got this guy at a PetSmart as he's the first Jackson's I've seen being sold in a store. As soon as I saw him, I knew I had to have him considering how rare they are in stores around here.

wow, i got my veiled from the mart too. i payed 100 alot, and he was in a small cage and he was under two months old..

Yes I took a few today but it will be a little while before I can post them. I'm having a problem with my flash card reader on my PC, but I'll get at least one up tonight.

do you have any pics?

Ok man here's a pic of my new little guy. I still haven't given him a name. I like my reptile names to be very unique. I hope you like the pic. :)

Very neat chameleon. did they tell you what type of species it is?

Oh I knew what kind it was just by looking at it. As I stated in the subject of this thread, it's a male baby Jackson's chameleon. I love these little guys, and one major reason is the 3 horns they get on their heads.

Well it's been a week, and he's still not eating. Could it be his enclosure's too big or something? He drinks just fine and he climbs all over, but it just refuses to take food of any sort. And I confirmed with the manager of the PetSmaryt I bought him at that he ate lots of crickets when they were feeding him at the store the other week. Any thoughts, people?

How big is the enclosure? It might be too big for a baby-juvenile chameleon. If it is too big, putting him in a smaller cage might cause some stress and thus delaying his first meal for a while.

It's a 38 gallon enclosure. It may be too large, I'm not really sure. The dimensions are as follows: 18 inches square and 30 inches tall.

Yay he's starting to eat now! I got him to take a small cricket and a couple of moths. I added a flourescent light that i got from Walmart and increased the brightness in his enclosure. I figured the light level wasn't high enough to simulate daytime levels so he may have lethargic for that reason.
