New Veiled Chameleon

:) i am soo happy your little cham is doing well..this is awesome!! i have been wondering how things were going..glad to hear all is good..:D

Good luck andrew, you were definitely given some great advice. For a first time lizard owner and especially at your age I would have probably went with an Iguana or an Anole lizard. Super cheap to take care of and fairly easy also. Only downside to the Iguana is they get pretty large.... so that one... eh.. you'd have to be prepared for. lol.

Anyways though it's always a good experience. You'll learn about taking care of something and with this comes responsibility. You will make mistakes...and you will learn from them. =D Best of wishes to the both of you ^^ Make sure you keep us updated!

i got mine a couple of weeks ago...it was about 2 inches and its doing ok..that age is perfectly fine to start with but of course the cham is a little more sensitive.. you have to be on top of your game and provide plenty of crickets.

make sure you are misting him 2 or 3 times a day with almost hot water, when its sprayed it feels much colder than it is so u need very warm water to spray him with or u can make him sick. Spray him for several minutes so he has plenty of time to drink, he may not drink right away. do not keep him in the glass tank for more than a couple months because there is not enough ventilation in there and he can get a bacterial infection very well from all the misted water that is growing bacteria in there. i kept my baby veiled in a glass tank for the first 3 months i had him and then i moved him into a completely ventilated cage. you also need to make sure u are dusting the crickets twice a week with calcium and vitamin d3. If u have no uvb bulb on there u need to make sure u are taking him outside daily for at least 30 minutes or longer to ensure he is absorbing enought calcium. i would get a uvb bulb for his cage as soon as u possibly can. Its very easy for these guys to get sick when they are very young, you really cant go wrong anywhere or he will be in trouble. my veiled was eating about 10-12 pinhead crickets when he was a baby and now that mine is about 5 months old hes eating about 8 medium-large crickets a day so u definatley need to feed him a lot more or he is going to be extremely underweight. make sure to never feed him crickets from outside as they could have pesticides in them which can kill ur little guy. crickets are very cheap at the petstore and even cheaper if u buy them from a cricket breeder. if u have any questions or concerns just ask.

For tonyamae19....I've kept chameleons for over 20 years now and I've always kept them in glass cages...some with screen doors and lids, some with screen lids only and some with screen lids and ventilation in the front....but they live long healthy lives. (I do live in Ontario though and would not recommend them if you live in a very warm climate without airconditioning, for example.)

Here's a whole thread about keeping them in glass cages...

she tricked me she had just started

she is looking good, just make sure to keep up with taking good care of her (and the bugs you feed her).

I'm proud of you for listening to the advice so many have given and making the changes needed for the health of your chameleon, keep learning and keep loving that little one (and she'll be a big one in no time)

oh speaking of, get to thinking about a bigger cage in a few months (or less) if she's anything like my panther she'll be out growing that one in no time!
